Description: This course focuses on a number of issues about language in education. Using sociocultural theory as a primary lens, we will look at how people acquire language, especially in bi- and multilingual contexts, as well as how they use language in the home and school contexts. We will examine effective classroom practices and ask: how can we use language in our classrooms to expand students’ repertoires of linguistic practice? How can we leverage students’ everyday language experiences for academic success? We will consider how language policies and larger societal discourse shape classroom practices, as well as students’ identities. Throughout the course, we invite you to examine your own beliefs about language and reflect on your experiences as both learners and teachers.
